For each of these schools we have written detailed gunsmithing school reviews written, but below we have included details on some of these online gunsmith schools:
American Gunsmithing Institute
The American Gunsmithing Institute or AGI as it’s better known, is undoubtedly the best promoted gunsmithing school in the world, physical or virtual. You can’t open a gun related magazine or website without bumping into their advertisements. Funny thing is even their competitor Penn-Foster, recommends the AGI videos in their FAQ on the Gunsmithing program. AGI has several courses on offer all of which are more expensive than most other online gunsmithing schools, apart from their hobbyist-level Practical Gunsmithing course. Their more advanced courses include: Professional Gunsmithing Level I, Professional Gunsmithing Level II, Master Gunsmithing and Enhanced Master Gunsmithing which range from just over $4,000 to over $10,000 in tuition fees. AGI’s courses are typically delivered by DVD.
AGI’s videos are often very good. Some of them treat a single subject in depth, such as bluing or stock bedding. And you can generally not fault the videos. Buy some cheap second hand guns from your local guns shop so you can get some hands-on practice while you watch the DVDs. Others lessons are simply an overview of a specific gun followed by field and detail stripping instructions. Even experienced gunsmiths might be well advised to reach for an AGI video before disassembling something that hasn’t been on their bench before. You can see a sample of AGI videos on their website.
Penn Foster Career School Online Gunsmith School
One gunsmithing school that provides online instruction is Penn Foster Career School. The Penn Foster Online Gunsmith School delivers a gunsmithing course consisting of six units. These units are sent through the traditional mail and you can then access the gunsmithing school’s website for more information. There are instructional videos and online information that you can access to help learn each unit.
Each unit builds upon the other and you will receive a new unit as you complete your exams for the previous unit. This allows you to continue on with the next unit as soon as you pass your previous exam. The first unit looks at how to organize yourself to take advantage of the home schooling situation. You will learn how to access and use their website, how to set up a study schedule and even how to prepare for exams. Once you have studied this, you will be introduced to the firearms industry. You will study how to assemble and disassemble firearms, what kinds of gunsmithing tools are needed to be a gunsmith and how to use them as well as safety issues and possible career opportunities. Once you have learned this unit then you will begin to study and learn some of the more technical skills to being a gunsmith. You will learn how to customize gun stocks, troubleshoot and repair firearms, as well as basic ballistics. You will also be taught how to find a job as a gunsmith. It should take approximately five months to study all six units and graduate as a gunsmith.
Sonoran Desert Institute Online Gunsmith School
Another online gunsmith school is the Sonoran Desert Institute Gunsmithing School. It will take approximately 48 weeks to complete the eight units in their course. Most of the units also have a lab kit which gives you detailed instructions on how to complete various tasks that are necessary to become a gunsmith.
The first unit will introduce the occupation of a gunsmith and the type of tools that are needed as well as licensing issues and how to set up a shop. Once you have completed this unit, you will be able to move on to the other seven units and begin learning the practical skills to be a gunsmith. You’ll learn how to disassemble and clean firearms, how to troubleshoot and repair damaged weapons and how to improve the accuracy of a firearm. You will learn how to work on gun stocks, work on metal parts and basic ballistics.
Once you have completed learning the technical skills required to become a gunsmith, the final unit will focus on what you need to do to set up your own business. You will learn about gunsmithing licenses that are needed, bookkeeping and other information on how to run a successful gunsmithing school. You will also study how to appraise firearms, how to buy and sell used guns and how to sell new guns. The gunsmithing school will also teach you how to import firearms.
Caldwell College Online Gunsmith School
A third gunsmithing school that teaches online is Caldwell College. Caldwell College offers classes similar to the two schools already mentioned but their focus is on students with a military background. They look for students who are presently in the military and need promotion points or on veterans who are looking to gain some civilian education to help their career.
Caldwell college gunsmithing school will provide instruction on how to accurize (make more accurate), repair and customize various firearms as well as adding sights and scopes to the firearm. You will also learn how to restore older firearms. In addition to learning the technical aspects of being a gunsmith, Caldwell College gunsmithing school will give you training in how to run a successful business. As part of the course, the gunsmithing school will send you all the required books, lessons and equipment that you need as well as industry charts and guides. The complete course takes approximately 260 course hours to finish.
Lenoir Community College Online Gunsmith School
Lenoir Community College also offers on-line courses in becoming a gunsmith. The material is accessed on-line but there is a requirement that you meet face to face with a supervisor. This gunsmithing school offers an associate degree in applied science and it takes 68 credit hours to complete. You will be required to take courses in both gunsmithing and general education.
You will be taught to read blueprints and how to make gunsmithing tools from drawings along with the usual technical skills of gun repair, customization and accurizing. One important thing to realize about this gunsmithing school is that most of the training work for the technical skills takes place in a hands-on lab. This means that while you can learn about the gunsmithing fundamentals, such as parts of a firearm, licensing and theory on-line, you will need to physically attend the school to complete the lab work.
There are some advantages and disadvantages to studying in an on-line school. You need to be able to keep focused on the coursework while working on your own and you need to be good at scheduling your time so that you can finish the work. One big advantage is being able to work on your own schedule although you may gain limited practical experience in an on-line school. Another advantage is that on-line schools may be the only option for a person who does not live near an area that offers courses at a gunsmithing school. This allows people that otherwise would not be able to pursue a gunsmithing career the opportunity to do so.
